The 2024 Advanced Sommelier Course in Dallas, TX, brought together nearly 200 aspiring Advanced Sommeliers—80 women and 120 men—for an immersive three-day educational experience. The program included regional seminars, small group deductive tastings led by Master Sommelier mentors, and three inclusive receptions.
With 35 Master Sommeliers in attendance, participants enjoyed personalized interactions, deepening their understanding and building connections that will support their careers for years to come.
Day 1: Ethics, Napa, and Networking
The course began with sessions on CMS-A Ethics and Values, Philosophy of Curriculum, and Advanced-level Deductive Tasting, establishing a strong foundation for the days ahead. Students engaged in small group tastings with Master Sommeliers, receiving real-time feedback to refine their deductive tasting skills. The afternoon lecture, “So you think you know Napa?” featured a deep dive and inside view into Napa Valley. The day concluded with the Diversity Committee Networking Reception, where students sampled wines from minority-owned producers and enjoyed soju-based cocktails. The theme, “Championing Inclusivity,” and the relaxed environment supported networking and building camaraderie.
Day 2: Germany, Access and Opportunities Panel, and Women’s Reception
Day two delved into German wines, exploring their terroir, winemaking techniques, and unique styles. The Access and Opportunities panel featured representatives from various organizations offering scholarships and mentoring programs, alongside personal own life advice. The Women’s Reception, featuring Board Member Liz Ngozi, highlighted the role of AI in advancing wine careers. The event fostered mentorship and collaboration, celebrating the contributions of women in the industry.
Day 3: Business of the Sommelier and Hospitality & Service
The final day focused on the business and service aspects of the sommelier profession, preparing students for real-world challenges in the wine industry. The day included hands-on workshops and unique tastings, such as horizontal tastings of Alsatian and Australian wines, as well as deductive tasting of various spirits. This comprehensive approach linked tasting skills with business acumen, ensuring students are well-prepared for success.
