David O’Connor, MS (1951–2016)
The Court of Master Sommeliers, Americas remembers David O’Connor, Master Sommelier and longtime San Francisco wine professional, who passed away on May 3, 2016, at the age of 64.
A native of San Francisco, David built a career in hospitality that included more than two decades directing the wine program at the Westin St. Francis Hotel on Union Square. He was known for his extensive knowledge of wine and his commitment to making wine accessible to restaurant guests and hospitality professionals.
David earned the Master Sommelier Diploma in 1985 and was the fourth American to achieve the distinction. His career placed him among the early generation of Master Sommeliers who helped establish and advance the profession in the United States.
In addition to his work at the St. Francis, David remained active in the San Francisco wine community and contributed his expertise to wine education, tastings, and professional events throughout his career.
